Born and raised in Tokyo, at five Aya Kakeda invented the Toltai Island whose inhabitants she still paints today. Now living and working in Brooklyn, NY, Kakeda lends her lifelong vision to both both the commercial and fine arts, producing intricate landscapes populated with characters that have followed her halfway around the world. Kakeda’s work has been produced by the likes of Nike, Delta, Disney, The New Yorker and the New York Times. She has been awarded three medals by the Society of Illustrators, SILA and 3×3 Illustrations. Her creations have also been shown in galleries and museums throughout the world in New York, Chicago, Mexico and Japan and England.
