There are many things we have in common with animals and the desire to create a safe and comfortable place to live, love and nurture our families is one of them. LAND OF OS celebrates the commonalities we have with the natural world through dense and layered prints, woodblocks and large-scale installations. Seeped with Cuban master print-maker Osmeivy Ortega’s unique blend of earthy symbolism, these works represent a new corridor of experimentation within Ortega’s already award-winning body of work. Here he combines his signature prints on paper with carved woodblocks, delicate gold string and stenciled tapestries to capture a warmth and homeyness that represents the spirit of Cuba in a unique and purposefully non-political way.

Growing up in his grandmother’s house in the countryside, surrounded by ferns, birds, and animals has deeply influenced his work which displays a striking affection for animals and a familiarity with nature. Ortega now lives and works in Havana where he is one of a thriving network of fine artists and musicians. Having graduated from the world-famous ISA, Ortega worked as a professor there, fostering a renewed interest in progressive printmaking techniques. He has had solo exhibitions in Washington DC and the Cleveland Institute of Art and as well as numerous group exhibitions within the United States, Mexico, and Spain.
